READ FOR JUSTICE BOOK CLUB

WHERE STORIES BECOME SPELLS FOR A MORE JUST WORLD -- ONE MONTH AT A TIME

About

The Read for Justice Book Club is a slow, thoughtful reading experience

for children, families, teachers, and adult learners who believe stories

can change how we see the world.

We are a community of readers exploring children's books connected to justice, courage, belonging, and care.

Each theme brings together three carefully chosen picture books organized around a larger idea. Readers move through the books at their own pace, sit with the stories, and reflect on what those stories might ask of them.

This is reading as practice. Reading as ritual. Reading as resistance.

How It Works

Each theme includes three books and a Storyseed discussion guide written by Zapoura Newton-Calvert — curriculum rooted in the Social Justice Standards from Learning for Justice and designed for readers of all ages, from the very young to the very grown.

When you finish all three books in a theme, you're invited to complete a short reflection called Activate Your Bracelet — a reading spell about what you learned, what you want to carry forward, and what you want to practice in the world.

Submit your reflection and receive a handmade bracelet connected to that theme. Not a prize. A reminder.

Who This Is For

The Read for Justice Book Club is for you if you are a parent or caregiver who wants to read justice-focused books with your children and have real conversations about the world. It's for you if you're a teacher or librarian looking for curriculum that goes deeper. It's for you if you're an adult learner who knows that picture books are for everyone, and that stories are one of the most powerful tools we have for building the world we want.

You don't need a reading group. You don't need to be an expert. You just need to show up for the books.

About the Curriculum

Storyseed Curriculum is written by Zapoura Newton-Calvert, co-founder of Reading Is Resistance and Teaching Associate Professor at Portland State University. Each guide includes discussion questions organized by page, connections to the Learning for Justice Social Justice Standards, facilitation tips for reading with children or in community, and a resource and action guide for going deeper.

The curriculum is rooted in abolitionist, decolonizing, heart/body-centered, and white anti-racist practices. It is designed for readers of all ages — because it is always the right time, and you are always the right age, to deepen your liberation practices.
