Welcome to the Place Hand Here Project, inspired by the story and mural in the book Place Hand Here by author and artist Katie Yamasaki.  This mural has its own magic, connecting a diverse array of neighbors through its invitation to place their hand on the giant yellow handprint.  Readers hear the stories of community members, learning about the reasons they might feel lonely (ranging from having migrated far from home to having an incarcerated parent) and ways they can support each other through friendship and care.

Create your own mural to put in front of your house, classroom, business, or organization.  Use the practice of reading the book, talking about the story, and creating your own mural to build your social justice capacity and take action in your own community!

The Place Hand Here Project takes inspiration from Yamasaki's art and book, inviting neighbors across the city (and across the nation?) to replicate the mural and share the message that we are all interconnected.

The mural symbolizes that we are all interconnected and that we can all play a role in lessening hardship.  Interacting with the mural and replicating it in our neighborhoods symbolizes that we are working together to build knowledge, empathy, and solidarity in the face of oppression, harm, and hardship.  While it is always the right time to build solidarity and to show care, it is especially urgent right now to show our neighbors that we stand together against hate and exclusion.
