You Are Not Alone (Lesson Plan)

INTRODUCTION

This reading guide is designed to accompany Alphabet Rockers and Ashley Evans’ picture book You Are Not Alone. We hold the belief that anti-racist practice is a process of learning (and unlearning) over time. Reading Is Resistance sees reading as an opportunity to seed deYou eper conversations and possibilities for action around racial justice in our communities.

Lesson content was written by Raina Christian and was designed to start and deepen anti-bias/anti-racist conversations in families and other learning communities. The editor was Remonda Hanna.

BOOK SUMMARY

You are Powerful. You are Brave.

You are Brilliant.

Everyone is unique. But in a world of prejudice and injustice, being different can feel scary. You Are Not Alone guides readers in exploring and celebrating their own and others’ identities, life experiences, and stories. Through the book’s exploration of diversity, readers learn that everyone belongs and no one is ever alone. Vibrant illustrations with inspiring messages teach readers to be an ally, to step up, and to stand up for each other. The book encourages everyone to use their voice in creating a more inclusive and peaceful world.
