Read for Justice: Winter 2020-2021

Updated: Dec 12, 2020

“Remember to imagine and craft the worlds you cannot live without, just as you dismantle the ones you cannot live within." -- Ruha Benjamin

WHAT IS THE READ FOR JUSTICE PROJECT?

The Reading Is Resistance "Read for Justice" Project is a season-long guided reading experience around a particular social justice topic. Designed for grown ups and their young readers (parents & kids, teachers & students, etc.), this focused time in community allows for connection and development of anti-racist vocabulary, capacity, and engagement.

We use each new season as a time to re-invest in our reflection, learning, conversation, and action around racial justice.

  • Fall Read for Justice: from fall equinox to winter solstice

  • Winter Read for Justice: from winter solstice to vernal equinox

  • Spring Read for Justice: from vernal equinox to summer solstice

  • Summer Read for Justice: from summer solstice to fall equinox

WINTER READ FOR JUSTICE THEME

This season theme "radical imagination" is inspired children's fantasy and visionary fiction by Black, Indigenous, and other authors of color. Our project is grounded in the works and practices of Walidah Imarisha, adrienne maree brown, and more.

WE LEARN TOGETHER

We will do sustained learning around the way radical imagination is key to racial justice, social change, and personal change as well.

This is designed with simple age-appropriate engagement for kids and grown ups to explore their radical imaginations and goals for the new year, to strengthen conversation skills and anti-racist vocabulary, and engage in and self reflection in order to be more active around racial justice long-term.
