I’ve been thinking a lot about the kinds of stories children (and adults) need right now.

Stories that help us understand the world around us. Stories that make space for empathy, courage, and imagination. Stories that help us notice injustice—and also imagine what care and liberation might look like.

Out of that thinking, I created the Read for Justice Book Club.

This book club is a slow, thoughtful reading experience where readers explore stories connected to justice, belonging, courage, and care. It’s designed to help us sit with meaningful books and reflect on what those stories might ask of us.

How the Read for Justice Book Club Works

Each theme in the Read for Justice Book Club includes three thoughtfully chosen children’s books connected to a larger idea or value.

Some of the themes include:

  • 🐇 Blue Rabbit — immigration & courage

  • 🐸 Green Frog — activism & care for the earth

  • 🌻 Sunflower — history, memory, and girls’ rights

  • 🐈 Calico Cat — refuge, friendship, and belonging

  • 🌿 Green Leaf — land, seeds, and liberation

  • 🧵 Cozy Quilt — art, identity, and storytelling

These are stories that invite conversation and reflection. They are meant to be read slowly, discussed together, and revisited.

Reflection and “Reading Spells”

After finishing the three books in a theme, readers are invited to complete a short reflection called Activate Your Bracelet.

As part of this reflection, readers write a small reading spell—a few lines about what they learned from the stories, what they want to carry forward, and what they want to practice in the world.

This reflection turns reading into a practice. It helps stories stay with us.

When readers submit their reflection, they receive a bracelet connected to that theme.

The bracelet isn’t a prize. It’s a reminder.

A reminder of the courage, care, and imagination that grew from those stories.

Why I Created This Book Club

I created the Read for Justice Book Club because I believe stories help shape how we see the world.

Children (and grown ups) deserve books that help them understand difficult realities—like immigration, environmental responsibility, and injustice—but in ways that also nurture hope, empathy, and imagination.

Stories help us practice the kind of people we want to be.

And when we pair those stories with reflection, conversation, and small rituals, the lessons stay with us longer.

An Invitation to Join the Social Justice Book Club for Kids

If this kind of reading experience speaks to you, I would love for you to join us.

The Read for Justice Book Club is a small, growing community of readers who believe stories can help children practice courage, care, and imagination.

We are currently welcoming our first group of founding readers, and it would mean a lot to have you be part of it.

Stories are powerful. When we read them together, they can become a practice—and sometimes even a little bit of magic.
