A NOTE FROM ZAPOURA
I adore this book. It's bright. It's honest. It's hopeful. And it doesn't just talk about the importance of voting but the importance of collectivity and community. The ways we care for and show up for each other is centered. Our history and the way we honor our ancestors and our future is at the heart.
This is a book that can seed so many conversations that build all of our justice capacity. Recommended for kiddos 3 and up and adults, too!
BOOK SUMMARY
It’s Election Day, and Grandma, Mommy, and Quetta all take a journey to their local voting place. Along the way we learn about obstacles to voting (travel, weather, mobility, accessibility, racism, etc.) and inspiration to vote (ancestors, historical movements, family, neighbors, etc.). In vivid illustrations and straightforward language, this story will prompt conversations on voting rights, fairness, and the power that comes from using your voice.

ABOUT STORYSEED SOCIAL JUSTICE CURRICULUM
Our curriculum and ongoing practices are rooted in emergent strategy: “the way complex systems and patterns arise out of a multiplicity of relatively simple interactions.” The interactions we have with books, among reading partners, inside classrooms, and within reading communities are relatively simple. What is cultivated from those interactions is something much more complex – lifelong, daily abolitionist, decolonizing, heart/body-centered, and anti-racist practices. These include learning how to make the ground more fertile for ongoing identity, healing, discussion, action, and imagination practices in ourselves and with each other.
Each curriculum includes section summaries, discussion questions, additional learning resources, and a list of books to read next.
