We are so lucky to work with an intergenerational team of folx here at Reading Is Resistance. We have an Advisory Board of college students who have completed Social Justice in K12 Education coursework at Portland State University and a Youth Advisory Team of middle grade readers. I have to say that my work with both groups of young people has been one of the things giving me hope and keeping me inspired at this time.
One of our goals for 2021 is to grow our Middle Reader Advisory Team. We've started with two such dynamic, thoughtful, awesome readers and hope to expand our team to 4 kiddos total in the 5th through 7th grade range in the new year. To get a taste of what we've been up to so far with our little sapling group, read on!
Introducing Our Middle Reader Advisory Team
MEET CHARLOTTE
My name is Charlotte, and I am a 5th grader, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. My favorite hobbies are reading and drawing. I like to be creative! I play piano and love to draw, and honestly, play video games and watch social media. I am very connected, whether that’s a good or bad thing. When I'm not reading, I can be found taking photos.
If I could have only one book for the year, it would be a book with all the information about everything.
Charlotte's Current Favorite Books
New Kid by Jerry Craft.
When the Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed.
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh
Go with the Flow by Williams Schneemann by multiple authors
Lumberjanes Series
MEET VERA
My name is Vera and I’m a 5th grader. My pronouns are she/ her/ hers and My favorite hobby is creative writing. My favorite activities are painting, hot gluing, baking, training my dogs, singing, and playing piano. When I'm not reading, you can find me playing Animal Crossing and eating apple-chai cinnamon rolls.
If I could have only one book for the year, it would be the almanac for that year so I know what will happen.
